De soort is typisch voor riviermondingen en komt in België voor in de Schelde. De brakwatermossel veroorzaakt aangroei- of ‘biofouling’ problemen in veel industriële sites in Europa, doordat de mossels zich gaan vestigen in koelwatersystemen.
