Dit bruinwier werd in Europa ingevoerd samen met de Japanse oesters (rechtstreeks uit Azië of met Japans bessenwier geïnfecteerde kweek uit Canada). Hoewel Japans bessenwier al sinds de jaren zeventig regelmatig bij ons aanspoelt werden de eerste vastzittende exemplaren pas in 1999 aangetroffen, in de haven van Zeebrugge. In gebieden waar het Japans bessenwier een succesvolle invasie kent (niet zo in België), verdringt het de oorspronkelijke soorten door zijn snelle groei. Anderzijds ondersteunen drijvende wierpakketten op zee een rijke gemeenschap van mariene organismen die het zeewier gebruiken als voedselbron, beschutting, foerageergebied of vasthechtingsoppervlak.","BibLvlCode":"MS","StandardTitle":"Japans bessenwier - <i>Sargassum muticum</i>.
