Het is een bastaard of hybride van het in Europa inheemse klein slijkgras <i>Spartina maritima<\/i> en de Noord- Amerikaanse slijkgrassoort <i>Spartina alterniflora<\/i>. Het Engels slijkgras werd destijds massaal aangeplant om aan landwinning en sedimentbinding te doen. De soort bleek echter heel invasief en zorgde voor een sterke wijziging in slikke- en schorrevegetaties.
