The traffic in the Deurganck and the (yet to be built) Saeftinge docks where large sailing container carriers interact with equally large moored container carriers;
The setup of jetties on the river banks and in the docks to moor tankers that also will be affected by the passing ships;
The interaction with smaller (inland) vessels.
To enable the validation of the software with the above conditions FHR wrote a research proposal [1] to the ROPES’ steering committee. Due to budget restrictions the accepted proposal, further referred to as proposal A, is only a reduced version of the initial one. For this reason the Antwerp Port Authority asked for an additional program [2], which will be referred to as proposal B. None of these proposals took account of the effect of a moored ship with an extremely small under keel clearance. Model tests addressing this issue are covered by a 3rd program C [3].
