The distributions of both species on Chatham Rise overlapped geographically and by depth; the entire P. bachus distribution was encompassed by the H. percoides distribution. The diets of both species were dominated by crustaceans, but fish was also an important dietary component for P. bachus, while pelagic tunicates were important for H. percoides. Despite the overlap in spatial distribution, P. bachus and H. percoides had distinct diets with non-significant overlap, which will markedly reduce resource competition between these two species. The most important crustacean prey were Galatheidae (Munida sp.) and the pandalid shrimp Notopandalus magnoculus in P. bachus, and two-spined crab (Pycnoplax victoriensis) and isopods in H. percoides. Within-species variation in diet was influenced by predator location and ontogeny. The main ontogenetic shifts in diet were from small shrimps to larger fish prey for P. bachus, and from small crustaceans (mysids and galatheids) to larger crustaceans (scampi and crabs) for H. percoides.","AbstractOtherLang":null,"BibLvlCode":"AS","StandardTitle":"Dietary partitioning by two sympatric fish species, red cod (Pseudophycis bachus) and sea perch (Helicolenus percoides), on Chatham Rise, New Zealand","OrigTitleLangCode":"en","OrigTitleLangCodeExtended":"eng","OrigTitleLangID":15,"DateLastModified":{"date":"2024-12-10 01:33:17.368041","timezone_type":1,"timezone":"+01:00"},"UserAccessRight":null,"UserAccID":null,"AuthorKeywords":"Trophic relationships; spatial; niche","OtherDescriptors":null,"Notes":null,"AnaPub":2012,"MonPub":null,"DateUpdate":"2018-02-13","DateCreate":"2012-06-29","SecASFANote":null,"ConfID":null,"PeerRev":1,"VlizCoreFlag":1,"WoScode":"WOS:000304592600006","VABBcode":null,"OpenAcc":0,"DOI":"10.1080/17451000.2011.653543"},"refs":null,"anarec":{"AnaID":216502,"PubliDate":2012,"Pagination":"624-634","XtraPublOfAnaID":null,"ISBN":null,"Volume":"8","Issue":"7","BRefMon":null,"BRefMonRR":null,"BRefXtra":null,"BRefXtraRR":null,"SerBRefID":72882,"SerRR":"Marine Biology Research.
