Daarom is het adviseerbaar om real-time informatie omtrent bodemvochtgehaltes mee te integreren in het voorspellingssysteem. Het meten of monitoren van bodemvochtgehaltes is echter geen eenvoudige taak, omwille van het variabele karakter in zowel tijd, ruimte als diepte. Dit onderzoek presenteert en vergelijkt verschillende methodes om het bodemvochtgehalte per hydrologisch bekken te bekijken. Het relatief bodemvochtgehalte wordt berekend door een vergelijking te maken met simulatieresultaten van een gebiedsgemiddeld conceptueel hydrologisch model. Dit kan rechtstreeks of onrechtstreeks, door gebruik te maken van de baseflow component. Een tweede aanpak maakt gebruik van neerslag, ETo en debietsmetingen en berekent de baseflow op basis van een deelstroomfilter en bepaalt het relatief bodemvochtgehalte door gebruik te maken van een empirische water balans berekening. Het kan worden aangetoond dat beide methodes in staat zijn om een beoordeling te maken van het bodemvochtgehalte in een hydrologisch bekken.<br>Vervolgens is er een methode opgesteld die de overschrijdingskans berekend van een vooraf bepaalde debietdrempel. Deze overschrijdingskans wordt berekend op basis van een logit relatie, die gebruik maakt van een bodemvochtindicator. Het wordt ook aangetoond dat het gebruik van de logit relatie op basis van een bodemvochtindicator betere resultaten geeft dan wanneer gebruik gemaakt word van het neerslagafstromingsdebiet. Het karteren van de overschrijdingskansen voor de verschillende hydrologische bekkens wordt beschouwd als een nuttige tool om de paraatheid bij overstromingen te verhogen en geeft ook onmiddellijk weer waar eventuele problemen verwacht kunnen worden.
