Causes for this trend are analysed and inevitably lead to the following question: engulfed in such a spiral, are we getting closer to a more faithful image of reality, or, on the contrary, are we building edifices? The author firmly advocates the first alternative, the merits of which he demonstrates mainly because of the growing stratigraphical precision that well defined genera permit. Moreover, he announces that the saturation point is not yet within sight.","AbstractOtherLang":"Du point de vue historique, l'accroissement du nombre de genres Rhynchonellides dévoniens s'est effectué en quatre phases: le déblocage et le lent démarrage, l'augmentation faible, l'accélération fulgurante, le morcellement accru. Les causes de cette tendance sont analysées et conduisent inévitablement à poser la question suivante: entraînés dans une telle spirale, nous rapprochons-nous d'une image plus fidèle de la réalité, ou, au contraire, édifions-nous des structures artificielles? L'auteur se range fermement au premier terme de l'alternative, dont il démontre le bien-fondé essentiellement par la précision stratigraphique croissante que les genres bien définis permettent d'atteindre.
