Deze afdeling van de Vlaamse overheid is een expertisecentrum dat wetenschappelijk onderzoek verricht rond de waterproblematiek.In dit eindwerk staat het pilootproject “Lippenbroek” centraal. Project “Lippenbroek” is een gecontroleerd overstromingsgebied (GOG) met een gecontroleerd gereduceerd getij (GGG). De water- en sedimentbeweging in Lippenbroek worden onderzocht in deze masterproef. In een eerste deel wordt er aan de hand van de beschikbare meetgegevens (periode 2009-2011) een water- en sedimentbalans opgesteld voor de polder. Hieruit blijkt dat ongeveer 60 % tot 70 % van het inkomende sediment achterblijft en bezinkt in de Lippenbroekpolder. Dit komt neer op een gemiddelde sedimentatiehoogte van 2 tot 3 cm per jaar. Uit de waterbalans blijkt dat gemiddeld de inkomende volumes water gelijk zijn aan de uitgaande. In een tweede deel van deze masterproef wordt de huidige kilvorm en andere kilvormen aan het bestaande numeriek model toegevoegd. De optimale kilvorm is deze waarbij de sedimenthoeveelheden die binnenkomen in het gebied het kleinste zijn. Om de verschillende kilvormen te vergelijken, wordt de vangefficientie van de kil gebruikt. De langste en breedste kilvorm blijkt de grootste vangefficientie te hebben. Indien de plaats beperkt is, kan er best een zo breed mogelijk kil geplaatst worden. De conclusies in deze masterproef dragen bij tot het ontwerp van andere GOG/GGG.
