Material previously assigned to S. reptans was examined, providing morphological characteristics to distinguish Scrupocellaria ellisi n. sp. Scrupocellaria reptans has a geographically limited distribution in the United Kingdom, while S. ellisi is more widespread in the North Sea, Northeast Atlantic, Adriatic and Tasmania.
