The development of the radula begins in the second half of the larval period. The transformation of the macromeres into midgut-cells is arrested, the digestion of their vitelline platelets is postponed. In <i>Buccinum</i> the midgut produces a special vesicle where the vitellus is digested. The epithelium of this vesicle shows no secretion; the enzymes for the digestion of the vitelline substances must come from the midgut.
