By relative position longitudinal and circular muscle cells form one functional unity. While the outer circular muscle cells are connected to one layer and separate by detaching cells a central from two lateral spaces, the inner longitudinal muscle cells have dissolved into single strands of muscular fibres. The characteristic of the pharyngeal muscle epithelium is that fibrils branch off and run into radial, longitudinal and circular directions; the bounderies between adjacent cells are sinous. In its fine structure the muscular system of the body wall is oblique striated, whereas the pharyngeal muscle fibres arc cross striated. There are differences in degree of organization of the myofilaments between longitudinal and circular muscle cells: the filaments of the mostly stressed longitudinal fibres at the ventrolateral side of the body are more regular and denser arranged than of other longitudinal fibres; in circular muscle cells even larger areals stay free between bundles of filaments. Structural specializations between muscle systems in marine gastrotrichs reflect their functional specializations.
