Many species referred to this genus were previously understood in a broad concept but do not belong to it. Six species of <em class=\"a-plus-plus\">Acanthoclema</em> are reported from the Devonian of Europe, which consistently show morphological characters shared with the type species. The generic diagnosis of <em class=\"a-plus-plus\">Acanthoclema</em> has been emended. The studied material was used for cluster analysis in order to reveal relationships between the six species of <em class=\"a-plus-plus\">Acanthoclema</em> and to compare them with <em class=\"a-plus-plus\">Nikiforovella gracilis</em>, a representative of the morphologically most similar genus. It is resumed that <em class=\"a-plus-plus\">Nikiforovella</em> derived from <em class=\"a-plus-plus\">Acanthoclema</em> in the Lower Devonian. These two genera show completely different trends in their evolution: a decrease of number of acanthostyles and metazooecia in <em class=\"a-plus-plus\">Acanthoclema</em>, and an increase of their number in <em class=\"a-plus-plus\">Nikiforovella</em>.
