Consideration of some useful taxa leads to a resume of the palaeoecology of the local stages in which the importance of recognizing facies differences is emphasized by comparison of the fossil assemblages with similarly prepared assemblages from Recent local marine environments and, in some cases, with Recent Sahul Shelf Ostracoda. This is followed by brief conclusions upon the regional palaeobiogeography that stress the influences of Tethys, the West Wind Drift, and endemism upon development of the southern Australian faunas.
