It is concluded that the name Palaeospinax priscus can only be applied to a single specimen on which no characters of taxonomic value can be discerned and is thus a nomen dubium. Palaeospinax cannot therefore be applied to other Early Jurassic specimens previously assigned to the genus. Species previously referred to as Palaeospinax are referred to Synechodus. The differences between the two valid palaeospinacid genera, Synechodus and Paraorthacodus are discussed and nominal species listed.
