After all, not every point along a river is suitable to be organised as a flood area. The location of the flood area must ensure that the area makes an efficient contribution towards safety. The impact on agriculture, local residents and the economy must also be kept to a minimum. The Flemish Government established the contours of the Sigma areas in 2005 and 2006 in the Most Desirable Alternative. This chapter outlines the contours of the Most Desirable Alternative for the Kalkense Meersen Cluster and the various sub-projects. It then explains how this Sigma project contributes towards the safety and nature objectives.
