Parallel to the ongoing and indisputable retreat of the Arctic summer sea ice, human activities increase rapidly into hitherto pristine parts of the Arctic Ocean: petroleum exploitation has begun, commercial fisheries are developing, and shipping routes across the Arctic Ocean are in operation with novel pollutants such as antifouling, ballast water and noise in their wake.
