Notothenioids probably appeared in the early Tertiary and began to diversify on the Antarctic shelf in the middle Tertiary, adapting to progressive cooling (Eastman 1993). Notothenioids are morphologically and ecologically diverse, and account for 77% of the shelf fish diversity, 92% of abundance and 91% of biomass (Eastman 2005).
