Laboratory tank-experiments indicated that competition in the form of interspecific aggressions are the primary determinant for the distribution in high salinity areas. Aggressiveness increases in the sequence: N. diversicolor; N. virens and N. succinea. However, the former species appears to be harmed more by N. virens than by N. succinea. The observed exclusion of N. diversicolorin areas occupied by N. succinea may therefore be caused be diffuse competition, i.e. cumulative effects of N. virens and N. succinea. N. diversicolor has apparently evolved a high tolerance for extreme environments at the expense of competitive ability. The tank-experiments revealed a clear preference for specific sediment types, i.e. N. virens-organic poor sand; N. succinea and N. dioersicolor-organic rich silts. However, the observed similarity of nereid distribution combined with the dissimilarity in sediment organic content in the two study areas indicated that sediment preference is not the primary determinant for the distribution patterns.","AbstractOtherLang":null,"BibLvlCode":"AS","StandardTitle":"Factors influencing the distribution of nereid polychaetes in Danish coastal waters","OrigTitleLangCode":"en","OrigTitleLangCodeExtended":"eng","OrigTitleLangID":15,"DateLastModified":{"date":"2026-06-15 01:32:41.065081","timezone_type":1,"timezone":"+02:00"},"UserAccessRight":null,"UserAccID":null,"AuthorKeywords":null,"OtherDescriptors":null,"Notes":null,"AnaPub":1988,"MonPub":null,"DateUpdate":"2015-01-06","DateCreate":"2015-01-06","SecASFANote":null,"ConfID":null,"PeerRev":1,"VlizCoreFlag":1,"WoScode":"WOS:A1988R664000003","VABBcode":null,"OpenAcc":0,"DOI":"10.1080/00785326.1988.10430824"},"refs":null,"anarec":{"AnaID":243766,"PubliDate":1988,"Pagination":"127-140","XtraPublOfAnaID":null,"ISBN":null,"Volume":"29","Issue":"2","BRefMon":null,"BRefMonRR":null,"BRefXtra":null,"BRefXtraRR":null,"SerBRefID":43470,"SerRR":"Ophelia: International Journal of Marine Biology.
