(Ed.)","Englishabstract":"This series of articles reviews the condition of our coastal and marine environment at the turn of the millennium. The recent past has been a period when unprecedented demands have been made on global resources, generated both by higher expectations and soaring populations. It has also been a time when we started to become aware that biological resources are far from being unlimited, and that they can even be destroyed locally. As a result of that realisation, the last few decades of the 2Oth century also became the time when we started, sometimes with faltering and feeble steps, to try and manage the ways in which we use and interact with the ecosystems on which we ultimately depend. This series aims to take stock of the condition of our marine and coastal habitats, and to summarise the extent to which they remain intact or otherwise, the ways in which they are being impacted or reduced, and the actions which we are taking to ensure that they may, by and large, remain in a functioning, sustainable and stable condition. Most chapters offer reviews of different regions, travelling around the world roughly from north to south or west to east.
