But there's been little agreement on how to respond. That changed last week, as an unprecedented, 2-year effort to set priorities for the beleaguered field unveiled some hard-edged recommendations. The National Science Foundation should immediately cut funding for several major hardware programs in order to divert some $40 million a year back to science, concluded a 20-member panel organized by the National Research Council. The cuts are \"the only way to recover funding for core science,\" concluded the panel. If adopted, however, the reductions could cause painful restrictions in some programs.","AbstractOtherLang":null,"BibLvlCode":"AS","StandardTitle":"A moment of truth arrives for U.S. ocean science","OrigTitleLangCode":"en","OrigTitleLangCodeExtended":"eng","OrigTitleLangID":15,"DateLastModified":{"date":"2026-04-28 01:31:46.617497","timezone_type":1,"timezone":"+02:00"},"UserAccessRight":null,"UserAccID":null,"AuthorKeywords":null,"OtherDescriptors":null,"Notes":null,"AnaPub":2015,"MonPub":null,"DateUpdate":"2018-02-13","DateCreate":"2015-01-30","SecASFANote":null,"ConfID":null,"PeerRev":1,"VlizCoreFlag":1,"WoScode":"WOS:000348639300012","VABBcode":null,"OpenAcc":0,"DOI":"10.1126/science.347.6221.463"},"refs":null,"anarec":{"AnaID":244434,"PubliDate":2015,"Pagination":"463","XtraPublOfAnaID":null,"ISBN":null,"Volume":"347","Issue":"6221","BRefMon":null,"BRefMonRR":null,"BRefXtra":null,"BRefXtraRR":null,"SerBRefID":43776,"SerRR":"Science (Washington).
