In these conditions the osmoregulatory functions are unable to cope with the situation created. As a consequence there are important changes in the osmotic pressure of the blood. The relative slowness with which the observed modifications appear may be explained by the comparatively small surface of exchange available, the carapace and the integuments constituting an adequate barrier to the diffusion. The lack of efficient osmoregulatory mechanisms thus explain the distribution of the species studied.
