Averages of symbiotic algae/cm<sup>2</sup> decrease as depth increases but their number shows fluctuations in each species of coral. Ratio of carotenoids/chlorophyl a seems uniform but chlorophyl c/ chlorophyl a decreases slowly with depth. This later relation is reversed in <i>Agaricia grahamae</i> (45 m). Average of pigments (chl. a and carot.) per cells of algae varies sufficiently between 9 and 30 m to distinguish two ecological populations in <i>M. lamarckiana</i>. Results/cm<sup>2</sup>/depth allows recognition of an ecological adjustement of symbiotic algae for each coral species.
