So Itoh’ s (1970) “edge index” and Nival and Nival’s (1973, 1976) “theoretical  filtration spectrum “ are analysed in relation with the kind of observation technic  used. The usefulness of these concepts is compared to recent rearing experiments. New observations suggest a relation between some buccal structures and the minimal size of particles that Copepods are able to swallow without any preliminary treatment.
