Drawing on recent scholarship to develop an innovative conceptual framework, this article takes the Belgian city of Antwerp as a case-study and uses nominal data on c. 20 000 newcomers between 1760 and 1860 to investigate the dynamics of migration change in a long-term perspective. In this period the city underwent a profound transformation from a middle-sized regional textile centre to a booming international port town of more than 120 000 inhabitants, while its rural hinterland was confronted with processes of impoverishment.
