Infestation rate varies significantly with the degree of water movement. The smallest molluscs occur on the upper and lateral faces of the starfish arms; their orientation with regard to the starfish mouth is seemingly not at random. The largest molluscs are found on the oral arm surface on the right hand side of the ambulacral groove and facing the starfish mouth.
