Sabkha environments, however, can be enriched with certain metals both actively and differentially through rapid sulfide formation mediated by stromatolite-forming cyanobacteria. Typical brackish water coastal lagoons can export metals, in particular, those soluble under anoxic conditions, such as manganese (Mn) and arsenic (As), and those forming stable chloro-complexes, such as cadmium (Cd). Organic compounds resulting from partial degradation of organic matter under anoxic conditions, as well as organic substances released by phytoplankton, can also form complexes and eventually export certain metals to coastal waters.
