This situation in the first place reflects the fact that every individual coastal system has its own characteristics which require a separate study and, at the same time, that generalization of results to other systems is more difficult. Other reasons are the relatively great economic importance attached to coastal areas and the, mostly negative, effects of human interference in nearshore processes.Nevertheless, it is to be expected that the rapidly increasing knowledge of many separate systems will lead to more efforts to synthesize this knowledge. Some aspects which may assist these efforts are described in this chapter. One positive development must be mentioned at the beginning: the number of journals and books devoted to coastal research is rapidly increasing. Exchange of information is obviously essential for a subject where one might easily be satisfied with the description of one system or a small group of systems. The present volume derives its value first of all from its synthetic character.","AbstractOtherLang":null,"BibLvlCode":"AMS","StandardTitle":"Future of research in coastal lagoons","OrigTitleLangCode":"en","OrigTitleLangCodeExtended":"eng","OrigTitleLangID":15,"DateLastModified":{"date":"2024-12-10 01:33:17.368041","timezone_type":1,"timezone":"+01:00"},"UserAccessRight":null,"UserAccID":null,"AuthorKeywords":null,"OtherDescriptors":null,"Notes":null,"AnaPub":1994,"MonPub":null,"DateUpdate":"2016-03-17","DateCreate":"2016-03-17","SecASFANote":null,"ConfID":null,"PeerRev":0,"VlizCoreFlag":1,"WoScode":null,"VABBcode":null,"OpenAcc":0,"DOI":"10.1016/s0422-9894(08)70024-2"},"refs":null,"anarec":{"AnaID":254183,"PubliDate":1994,"Pagination":"553-561","XtraPublOfAnaID":null,"ISBN":"0-444-55556-0","Volume":"60","Issue":null,"BRefMon":254146,"BRefMonRR":"<b>Kjerfve, B.
