Three of these forms, mainly from the Indian Ocean and previously described as three different species, <i>V. assimile, V. lacunosum</i> and <i>V. rubicundum</i>, share many characters and have often been confused. They are considered here to represent only two species, <i>V. assimile</i> and <i>V. rubicundum</i>, while <i>V. assimile lacunosum</i> is treated as a subspecies restricted to the Persian Gulf. <i>V. assimile</i> is restricted to the western Indian Ocean, southernmost Red Sea and Persian Gulf, whereas <i>V. rubicundum</i>, although more abundant in the southeastern Indian Ocean, extends also in a large part of the Western Pacific, where it has been described as <i>mindanense, compunctum</i>, and <i>kengaluorum</i>.
