This implies namely the prevalence of microorganisms food chains and the occurrence of special adaptations of microorganisms in their transport system for substrates. lt is also shown that a high bacterial heterotrophic activity is not necessary linked to a high rate of ammonium regeneration, depending on the C/N ratio of the organic matter used.
