Although they are an important species for use in ecotoxicology investigations, information on their reproductive physiology and biochemistry is fragmentary. Mass spectrometry-based profiling techniques are increasingly being used to study how the metabolome of an organism changes as a result of tissue differentiation, disease or in response to environmental stressors. In this study, ultraperformance liquid chromatography–time-of-flight-mass spectrometry (UPLC–TOFMS) was used to investigate sex specific differences in the mussel metabolome in order to further investigate the reproductive physiology of this species. Using this method, a comparison of female and male mantle tissues containing mature gonad, revealed significant differences in glycerophosphatidylcholine (PC) and lysophosphatidylcholine (LPC) metabolites. A number of other unidentified metabolites, including those putatively identified as conjugated sterols, were also differentially expressed between male and female mantle/gonadal tissue.","AbstractOtherLang":null,"BibLvlCode":"AS","StandardTitle":"Metabolomic analysis of sex specific metabolites in gonads of the mussel, <i>Mytilus edulis</i>","OrigTitleLangCode":"en","OrigTitleLangCodeExtended":"eng","OrigTitleLangID":15,"DateLastModified":{"date":"2026-04-20 01:32:11.684783","timezone_type":1,"timezone":"+02:00"},"UserAccessRight":null,"UserAccID":null,"AuthorKeywords":"Metabolomics; Mytilus edulis; Phospholipids; Sex; UPLC-TOFMS","OtherDescriptors":null,"Notes":null,"AnaPub":2012,"MonPub":null,"DateUpdate":"2020-06-19","DateCreate":"2016-05-29","SecASFANote":null,"ConfID":null,"PeerRev":1,"VlizCoreFlag":1,"WoScode":"WOS:000303845500012","VABBcode":null,"OpenAcc":0,"DOI":"10.1016/j.cbd.2012.03.002"},"refs":null,"anarec":{"AnaID":257484,"PubliDate":2012,"Pagination":"212-219","XtraPublOfAnaID":null,"ISBN":null,"Volume":"7","Issue":"2","BRefMon":null,"BRefMonRR":null,"BRefXtra":null,"BRefXtraRR":null,"SerBRefID":219910,"SerRR":"Comparative Biochemistry and Physiology.
