It is composed of fusiform calcareous spicules which are probably secreted by the foraminiferan. The spicules on the spiral side are oriented parallel to the periphery of the test, and are variously oriented in groups of two to five on the apertural side. The spicules are held together by an organic membrane which contains sulfur. The initial part of the test, generally the first five chambers, is composed of two parts: an inner organic membrane and an outer layer of spicules. The later chambers are composed of two layers of spicules on the spiral side and one layer on the apertural side. The spicules are composed of low magnesium (4-5 weight percent) calcite with the C-axes parallel to the elongation of the spicules.
