The leaves lost 9% of their ash free dry mass (AFDM) via leaching during 30 days. At this time bacterial production supported by the leaves was distributed with 61% in the water and 39% on the leaves. A carbon budget indicated that bacteria consumed 28% of the leached dissolved organic carbon. This consumed carbon was mostly (71%) respired and 29% of it was allocated into the bacterial biomass. Eight percent of the leached organic carbon and 0.8% of the initial carbon content of the leaves entered into the bacterial biomass.
