On the Belgian continental plat the rate of the infected whiting was 9.5 % against 3.6 % in the open sea. This phenomenon is related to the sea gull pollulation and to the presence of the intermediate host Littorina littorea. Taking in account the degree of infection, about 2 % of the catch is less suitable for sale as fresh fish. With regard to the condition, whiting has been significantly influenced by the presence of the trematode.
