Several parameters such as level and frequency of feeding, maximal food intake and feed conversion rate (FCR) were determined during the first month of larval rearing. The survival rate of the larvae was very high, generally more than 90%. The best growth was attained with the highest daily ration (from 2500 rotifers per larva during the first week of rearing to 5500 rotifers per larva during the fourth) and a 4 times-a-day feeding frequency, with a FCR of 0.86. From a mean initial body weight of 0.5 mg at hatching, the larvae reached 17.5 mg in 3 weeks. However, a reduction in the growth rate was observed after the second week, indicating a nutritional deficiency of the yeast-fed rotifers or a too small size of this live food.
