The main part of the volume is a checklist of some 30,000 valid species, for certain groups supplemented by synonymies and basic distribution information. The volume is the collective work of 170 persons who contributed their expertise to the European Register of Marine Species (ERMS), a project part-funded by the European Commission (EC) Marine Science and Technology (MAST) research programme. Pour la premi\u00e8re fois, le pr\u00e9sent volume pr\u00e9sente un r\u00e9pertoire complet et coordonn\u00e9 de toutes les esp\u00e8ces -plantes, algues, invert\u00e9br\u00e9s, vert\u00e9br\u00e9s- \u00e1 l'\u00e9chelle des mers d'Europe. Il est le fruit du travail collectif de pr\u00e8s de 170 scientifiques dans le cadre du projet European Register of Marine Species (ERMS), soutenu par la Commission Europ\u00e9enne dans le cadre de son programma Marine Science and Technology (MAST).Le coeur g\u00e9ographique du r\u00e9pertoire est centr\u00e9 sur le plateau continental europ\u00e9en, les Canaries et les A\u00e7ores, jusqu'\u00e1 l'Islande et le nord de la Norv\u00e8ge, y compris bien entendu la M\u00e9diterran\u00e9e et la mer Baltique. De nombreuses lacunes subsistent sans aucun doute aux fronti\u00e8res g\u00e9ographiques (Oc\u00e9an Arctique, Mer Noire, sud des A\u00e7ores et des Canaries) et bathym\u00e9triques (faunes bathyales et abyssales), et l'objectif d'une prochaine \u00e9dition du R\u00e9pertoire devrait \u00e9tre pr\u00e9cis\u00e9ment de combler ces lacunes. Une grande partie de la mer Baltique est occup\u00e9e par de l'eau douce, et il a \u00e9t\u00e9 laiss\u00e9 \u00e1 l'appr\u00e9ciation des diff\u00e9rents coordinateurs d'inclure, ou non, les esp\u00e8ces de ce secteur dans le R\u00e9pertoire.Le R\u00e9pertoire catalogue environ 30 000 esp\u00e8ces dans l'ensemble des groupes taxonomiques. Seuls les noms publi\u00e9s et nomenclaturalement disponibles ont \u00e9t\u00e9 pris en consid\u00e9ration. A quelques tr\u00e8s rares exceptions pr\u00e8s, ne sont incluses que les esp\u00e8ces dont l'occurrence \u00e1 l'int\u00e9rieur du cadre g\u00e9ographique du projet avait d\u00e9j\u00e1 \u00e9t\u00e9 reconnue dans la litt\u00e9rature. Certains petits groupes taxonomiques sont incompl\u00e8tement couverts : ainsi, chez les Acariens, seule la familie Halacaridae a \u00e9t\u00e9 trait\u00e9e, et le catalogue des Rotif\u00e8res et des Brachiopodes ne couvre que l'Atlantique nord-est. Les lichens, les diatom\u00e9es et les cyanobact\u00e9ries ne faisaient pas partie des objectifs du projet, de m\u00eame que les bact\u00e9ries (Eubacteria and Archaea) et les virus. L'opportunit\u00e9 de traiter plusieurs groupes de protistes et les champignons a \u00e9t\u00e9 saisie, bien que non inclus \u00e1 l'origine dans les objectifs. Les angiospermes des sols sal\u00e9s sont d\u00e9j\u00e1 couverts dans les catalogues de v\u00e9g\u00e9taux terrestres, et il n'a pas \u00e9t\u00e9 jug\u00e9 utile de les prendre en compte dans ce r\u00e9pertoire.Pour faciliter la consultation, les groupes taxonomiques sont pr\u00e9sent\u00e9s selon une s\u00e9quence qui va des champignons et des plantes aux organismes unicellulaires (protistes), puis aux animaux pluricellulaires, pour terminer avec les oiseaux et les mammif\u00e8res. A l'int\u00e9rieur de chaque famille, les genres sont pr\u00e9sent\u00e9s alphab\u00e9tiquement, et \u00e1 l'int\u00e9rieur de chaque genre, les esp\u00e8ces le sont \u00e9galement.Dans les listes d'esp\u00e8ces, les synonymes, ou tout autre nom employ\u00e9 pour d\u00e9signer une m\u00eame esp\u00e8ce, sont pr\u00e9c\u00e9d\u00e9s du signe '\u00e9gal' (=).
