Holocène: assise de Dunkerque : facies sableux et facies argileux; tourbe de surface; assise de Calais: facies marin et facies fluviatile. A. Pléistocène supérieur: sédiments sablo-limoneux d'origine nivéo-éolienne. I. <i>Tertiaire</i> Yprésien : facies argileux.Les dépressions importantes creusées dans le substrat yprésien ont été déja en grande partie comblées par des sédiments pléistocènes. Par suite de changements climatiques importants vers la fin de la dernière glaciation (disparition du sous-sol gelé), s'est creusé un système fortement ramifié de vallées. Ces vallées postglaciaires ont été comblées d'abord par des sédiments de l'assise de Calais, de facies marin argilo-sableux dans le nord, de facies fluviatile avec intercalations tourbeuses dans le sud de la région étudiée. La tourbe de surface s'est développée ensuite dans les vallées postglaciaires de même que sur les terrains relativement bas avoisinants. Enfin les sédiments de l'assise de Dunkerque, principalement ceux déposés à partir du IVe siecle ap. J. C. ont recouvert une aire encore plus vaste et ont achevé le colmatage des vallées postglaciaires.
