They feed on planktic diatoms common in the North Sea: <i>P. verrucosa</i> sp. nov. (on <i>Rhizosolenia delicatula</i>), <i>P. formosa</i> sp. nov. (on <i>Rhizosolenia setigera</i>), <i>P. diadema</i> sp. nov. (on <i>Coscinodiscus granii</i> and <i>C. wailesii</i>), <i>P. eucampiae </i>(on <i>Eucampia zodiacus</i>) and <i>P. mucosa</i> sp. nov. (on <i>Rhizosolenia shrubsolei</i>). The occurrence of resting cysts in <i>Pirsonia guinardiae</i> is reported.
