We developed the Density Package and MT3DENSE for the three-dimensional MODFLOW code to simulate the effect of density differences in the groundwater system. Density effects are accounted for by density-source terms, which are added to the standard MODFLOW equations. In the Density Package the density distribution is assumed to be constant in time, in MT3DENSE the density-driven flow changes in time due to displacement of chloride. The calculated heads are fresh-water heads.
