The species composition in the two assemblages was very different and the number of species recorded in the Mira site (47) was higher than that in the Mussulo site (18). The dominant fish families were the Syngnathidae, Gobiidae, Sparidae and Labridae in the Mira assemblage and the Haemulidae and Mugilidae in the Mussulo. Both assemblages were composed of a large proportion of species that use these estuarine systems as nursery areas. The percentage of resident species was higher in the Mira estuary. Considering the trophic guilds, for both areas, the benthophagous species were the dominant group.
