The traditional subgeneric division of <i>Stenhelia</i> is abandoned since both subgenera, <i>Stenhelia(Stenhelia)</i> and <i>Stenhelia (Delavalia)</i>, are polyphyletic taxa. The latter is tentatively upgraded to generic rank pending a phylogenetic analysis of the Stenheliinae. The genus <i>Stenhelia</i> is restricted to a core group of species formerly allocated to the subgenus <i>Stenhelia (Stenhelia)</i>, including <i>S. gibba, S. proxima, S. curviseta, S. divergens, S. peniculata, S. pubescens</i> and both new species from the Bohai Sea, <i>S. sheni</i> sp. nov. and <i>S. taiae</i> sp. nov., which are most closely related to <i>S. pubescens</i>, described from the Sea of Japan. The genus <i>Beatricella</i>, erroneously considered a junior objective synonym of <i>Stenhelia</i>, is reinstated to accommodate <i>S. aemula</i> as the type species. The problematic <i>S. asetosa</i> is transferred to a new genus <i>Anisostenhelia</i> primarily on account of the sexual dimorphism of the swimming legs and is regarded as the sistergroup of <i>Stenhelia</i>. The P1 endopod of the bathyal <i>S. diegensis</i> is reinterpreted and consequently the species is re-assigned to the genus <i>Delavalia</i> where it is most closely related to other deepwater species. <i>S. xylophila</i> is designated as the type of a new genus <i>Hicksia</i>.
