These include Retropluma denticulata (Solomon Islands), R. notopus (Fiji), R. plumosa (Fiji), R. quadrata (Philippine Islands), R. serenei (Fiji Islands and New Caledonia), R. laurentae n. sp. (Indonesia, Philippine Islands, Solomon Islands and New Caledonia), and Bathypluma forficula (Solomon Islands and New Caledonia). The new material considerably extends the distribution of retroplumid crabs eastwards in the Pacific and also extends the depth range of several species. There are now ten extant species of retroplumids known in two genera: Bathypluma de Saint Laurent, 1989 and Retropluma Gill, 1894. Although larval development is unknown, their small egg size suggests that retroplumids have indirect development. Three fossil genera, containing eight species, are recognized: Costacopluma Collins & Morris, 1975, Retrocypoda Via Boada, 1957 and Loerenthopluma Beschin et al. 1996. Some of the fossils placed in the Retroplumidae probably belong to the Palicidae Bouvier, 1898. An analysis of recently discovered fossil retroplumids shows that this family first appeared in the Proto-Atlantic Ocean during the Late Cretaceous, but became extinct in the Atlantic by the Pliocene. The family is now only found in Indo-West Pacific seas.
