The Mediterranean is an excellent example of this (e.g., Pirazzoli, 1987). Two examples of non-eustatic effects revealed in recent tide gage analyses include meteorological/oceanic effects (Goldsmith and Gilboa, 1987) and local neotectonics (Emery et al., 1987). In both examples, these effects largely outweigh, and mask, eustatic effects as revealed in monthly mean sea levels determined from tide gages in the Mediterranean.
