Title
How to distinguish Neochallichirus, Sergio, Podocallichirus and Grynaminna (Decapoda: Callianassidae: Callichirinae) from each other in the fossil record?
Abstract
This contribution discusses the generic assignment of several callianassid genera of the subfamily Callichirinae Manning and Felder, 1991 in the fossil record, namely Neochallichirus Sakai, 1988; Sergio Manning and Lemaitre, 1994; Podocallichirus Sakai, 1999; and Grynaminna Poore, 2000. We argue that generic assignment of fossil callianassid remains can be done successfully on the basis of chelipeds, but only if all cheliped elements (ischium, merus, carpus, propodus and dactylus) are at hand. Moreover, thorough comparisons between fossils and extant material should be always made before assignment of the fossil remains to the genus level. ”Neocallichirus” grandis Karasawa and Goda, 1996 from the Middle Pleistocene of Japan is revised and assigned to the genus Grynaminna.
