Title
Developing innovative mussel farm and use of mussel shell meal for birds’ food
Abstract
Aquaculture is the only environmentally friendly method for production of mussels and preservation of mussel population. The first attempt to build underwater mussel farm was made by scientists from the Institute of Fish Resources in Varna (IFR) in 1971. The innovative mussel farm developed by the IFR team in 2010-2012 contributed to update and use the scientific capacity of our marine science in a new and more productive branch of mussel cultivation in the Black Sea. The growth of mussels and reaching of commercial size is directly dependent on their diet and that was the reason for investigation of the environmental conditions in the aquatory of the mussel farm in 2010 – 2012. Mussel shell meal from the farm was tested as food additive in broiler ration and it was found to be favorable in improving the growth indicators. The aim of the study was to establish the impact on productivity and morphological properties of eggs using mussel shell meal as a source of calcium in the diet of laying hens.
