Religious symbolism figures prominently, depicting concepts associated with both Christianity and local Guinea Coast religion. Furthermore, these ivories, produced for export, are also thematically focused on commerce, often in a self-referential manner. In addition to offering a contextualized iconographic interpretation of the ivories from “Serra Leoa,” this chapter articulates a semantic—or at least a syntactical—structure that connects the entire range of visual images and metaphors.","AbstractOtherLang":null,"BibLvlCode":"AM","StandardTitle":"African meanings and European-African discourse","OrigTitleLangCode":"en","OrigTitleLangCodeExtended":"eng","OrigTitleLangID":15,"DateLastModified":{"date":"2024-12-10 01:33:01.897972","timezone_type":1,"timezone":"+01:00"},"UserAccessRight":null,"UserAccID":null,"AuthorKeywords":"\tsalt cellars, ivory, commerce, Serra Leoa, West Africa, sixteenth century, seventeenth century","OtherDescriptors":null,"Notes":null,"AnaPub":2014,"MonPub":null,"DateUpdate":"2018-05-02","DateCreate":"2018-05-02","SecASFANote":null,"ConfID":null,"PeerRev":0,"VlizCoreFlag":1,"WoScode":null,"VABBcode":null,"OpenAcc":0,"DOI":"10.1093/acprof:oso/9780199379187.003.0010"},"refs":null,"anarec":{"AnaID":295162,"PubliDate":2014,"Pagination":"236-266","XtraPublOfAnaID":null,"ISBN":"978-0199379194","Volume":null,"Issue":null,"BRefMon":295151,"BRefMonRR":"<b>Trivellato, F.; Halevi, L.; Antunes, C.
