Abstract
The phylum Mollusca is the second largest animal group next to Arthropoda in terms of vast number of species. They are important component biomass of terrestrial and freshwater ecosystems. Mollusca play a vital role in ecosystem services and act as a bio-indicator. The malacofauna of Indian Himalaya is estimated to be around 422 species, of which 379 species of land and 43 species of freshwater mollusca, distributed throughout the area. In this chapter, a review on the status and distributional pattern of Indian malacofauna in the Indian Himalayan landscape, based on biogeograpic provinces have been provided with the checklist of malacofauna of the region along with notes on endemism and threats.
