Op 3 januari 2018 werd in Antwerpen aan het loodsgebouw een hoogwaterpeil van TAW +7,16 m gemeten. De gecontroleerde overstromingsgebieden (GOG) aangelegd in het kader van het Sigmaplan kenden allen, uitgezonderd GOG Wijmeers, vulling via de overloopdijk. Deze stormperiode vond plaats tijdens een periode met verhoogde bovenafvoer.<p>Het Waterbouwkundig Laboratorium beschikt over een 1D hydrodynamisch model van het Zeescheldebekken, het zogenaamde referentiemodel, en een hieruit afgeleid voorspellingsmodel. Het doel van deze studie is de performantie van deze modellen tijdens een zware storm, zoals deze van 3 januari 2018, te evalueren.<p> Het referentiemodel van het Zeescheldebekken en het voorspellingsmodel zijn geactualiseerd naar de situatie van januari 2018 en met deze modellen wordt de storm van 3 januari 2018 nagerekend. Daarbij zijn enkel historische meetreeksen als randvoorwaarde gebruikt (=”hindcast”). Waterpeilen zijn geëvalueerd ter hoogte van meetposten langs de Zeeschelde en getijgebonden zijrivieren. Ook in de GOG’s zijn waterpeilen geëvalueerd op basis van meetgegevens van waterpeilmeters. De resultaten van de berekeningen met beide modellen worden ook onderling vergeleken. Algemeen kan gesteld worden dat langs de Zeeschelde en de afwaartse gedeelten van de tijgebonden zijrivieren de gesimuleerde waterpeilen de metingen vrij goed benaderen. De hoogwaters voor het stormhoogwater worden veelal overschat.
