Here we analyse variability in Neomysis americana numbers at hourly and daily time scales in the Solis Grande river estuary, a sub-estuary that empties into the Rio de la Plata (Uruguay). Samples weretaken at two stations along the main axis (mouth and upper river), two depth strata (surface and bottom), and four times a day for a 15 day period; on two occasions hourly samplings covering the 24 h cycle were also performed. Mysids occurred in largest numbers in the upper river and at the beginning of the study period (max. 1975 ind.m-3), but theirabundance decreased as environmental conditions changed to less saline and warmer waters. These results may indicate that the population from the Solis estuary would be a self-sustaining unit. Hourly variations in mysid numbers demonstrated a pattern of appearance during darker hours and disappearance during light hours, suggesting a circadian behaviour of excursions from the hyperbenthos to the pelagic domain.
