It is the third species recorded in Mexico and the second species of <i>Hyalella</i> found in the Aktun-Ha sinkhole. It can be distinguished from its closest species, <i>Hyalella azteca</i> from Veracruz, by the shape of the palp of maxilla 1, the number of setae in the posterior margin of the basis, the relative palm length and the truncate process of gnathopod 2 in males, the number of setae in the lobe of the basis of pereopod 7, and the shape and setation of the telson. Those characters have been found to be useful for species distinction in the complex by González and Watling (2002).
