Having the scales elsewhere on the body twice as numerous as those in the lateral line, <i>anisolepis</i> stands alone and we cannot ally it closely with other cardinalfishes. <i>A. robinsi, phenax</i> and <i>pillionatus</i> all are closely related to each other and to the described species <i>planifrons</i>; <i>robinsi</i> is the most dis- tinctive member of this group-having a premaxillary tooth patch that continues laterally outside the mouth so that many of the teeth are exposed when the mouth is closed -while the other species are distinguished mainly on features of pigmentation and gill-raker counts. <i>A. xenus</i>, a species that lives in sponges, is close to the described forms <i>conklini</i> and <i>pigmentarius</i>, the three separated by only minor and usually average differences.
